Eligibility
Indexed, crawlable, no blocking robots rules or snippet restrictions, and a working page experience on mobile.
Google AI Overviews SEO is making your pages eligible and useful as sources for the AI summaries at the top of Google Search and in AI Mode. Google says there are no extra requirements: a page must be indexed and eligible to show a snippet. The work is solid SEO plus clear, answer-first content.
AI Overviews are short AI-generated summaries that appear for some searches, with links to the pages used. AI Mode is a separate conversational search experience. Google's guidance says both use its normal ranking and quality systems, so the pages that already do well in Search are the ones most likely to be used.
For local businesses, AI Overviews often appear on research questions such as cost, timing, choosing a provider or comparing options. Pages that answer those questions directly and honestly give Google a reason to link to you.

Make sure the page is indexed and allowed to show a snippet, then answer the question clearly near the top. Google says no special markup is required. Being used as a source is never guaranteed, because Google picks the pages it judges most helpful for each search.
You can limit how your content is shown with the nosnippet or max-snippet controls, which also limit normal snippets in Search. Blocking Google-Extended does not remove you from AI Overviews. Most local businesses are better served staying eligible.
For some simple questions, yes, because the summary answers them. For decisions like hiring a provider, people still click to compare. Focus on questions where your page adds something the summary cannot, such as prices, availability or proof of work.
Clicks and impressions from AI Overviews and AI Mode are counted inside the Web search type in the Performance report. They are not shown separately, so watch the queries and pages that trigger AI Overviews for changes over time.
