Your website
Clear facts near the top of pages, consistent names, and an About page that shows who is behind the business.
Generative engine optimization (GEO) is improving how generative AI tools such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews describe and cite your business. It focuses on accurate, consistent facts about you across the web and pages that AI systems can understand and trust.
Generative engines write answers instead of listing links. When someone asks for a recommendation, the tool blends information from websites, business profiles, reviews and articles into a few sentences. GEO is the work of making sure the information about your business in those sources is correct, clear and worth citing.
GEO overlaps with entity SEO. An entity is a clearly defined thing, such as your business, with consistent facts attached: name, services, location, people, credentials. The clearer and more consistent those facts are, the easier it is for an AI tool to describe you correctly.

Google Business Profile, Bing Places, Apple Maps and social profiles that match your website exactly.
Directories, industry sites, local news and review platforms that AI tools treat as independent evidence.
Making sure the crawlers that AI search tools use are not blocked by your robots.txt or firewall.
Each step has a realistic timing. Larger sites and competitive markets take longer.

I'm an independent consultant, so the standards below are mine, in writing, for every client.
Ask it the questions your customers would ask, such as the best provider of your service in your area, and note the answers and sources. Answers vary between sessions, so I record them monthly to see a trend rather than relying on one result.
ChatGPT search uses its own crawler, OAI-SearchBot, alongside third-party search providers. OpenAI advises allowing OAI-SearchBot in robots.txt if you want to appear in ChatGPT search results. Your Google visibility still matters because many sources overlap.
There is no organic placement you can buy in AI answers. Some tools test ads, which are labelled separately. Organic mentions come from being a clear, trusted and consistently described business across the sources the tools read.
Fixing conflicting details can change AI answers within weeks as sources are re-crawled. Earning third-party mentions takes months. Because AI answers change often, results are judged as a trend over three to six months, not one check.
