Answer engine optimization (AEO)

Answer engine optimization (AEO) is structuring your content so search engines and AI tools can lift a clear answer straight from your page. It targets featured snippets, People Also Ask, voice answers and AI summaries. The method is simple: answer the question first, in plain words, then explain.

What is answer engine optimization?

An answer engine is any system that replies with an answer instead of a list of links: Google's featured snippets and AI Overviews, voice assistants, and chat tools like ChatGPT. AEO is the practice of writing and structuring pages so those systems can understand and reuse your answers.

For a local business that means pages that state clearly what you do, where you work, what it costs or what affects the cost, how long it takes, and what the customer should do next. Those are the questions people ask, and the ones AI tools try to answer.

What's included

  • Question research from People Also Ask, autocomplete and your own enquiries
  • Question map: which page answers which question
  • Rewrites that put the answer first on key pages
  • FAQ sections written fresh for each page
  • Definitions, steps and comparison tables where they help
  • Structured data that matches the visible content

Answer formats I use

Definitions

A one-sentence "X is Y" answer at the top of a page or section, written so it makes sense on its own.

Steps

Numbered processes with realistic timing, which suit how-to questions and featured snippets.

Tables

Comparisons such as option A vs. option B, which AI tools and snippets reuse well.

Short FAQs

Forty to sixty word answers that lead with the answer and include a number or rule.

How it works

Each step has a realistic timing. Larger sites and competitive markets take longer.

  1. 1

    Question research

Collect what customers ask from search data, calls and messages.

    Week 1
  2. 2

    Question map

Assign each question to the best page, without duplicates.

    Week 1
  3. 3

    Rewrite

Answer-first sections, headings and FAQs on priority pages.

    Weeks 2 to 4
  4. 4

    Markup

Structured data that matches what is on the page.

    Week 4
  5. 5

    Measure

Track snippets, questions and AI mentions monthly.

    Monthly

Signs you need this

  • Your pages describe you but do not answer customer questions
  • Competitors appear in People Also Ask and you do not
  • Customers call to ask things your website could have answered
  • Your FAQ page is the same five generic questions as everyone else

What affects the cost

AEO is usually part of a content or AI SEO project. The scope depends on:

  • Number of pages to rewrite
  • How many services you offer
  • Whether new pages are needed for unanswered questions
  • Whether you provide the facts or I research them with you

You get a fixed quote after a short call. No surprise extras.

Not sure which service you need? Start with a free call and I'll tell you what I'd fix first.

Frequently asked questions

SEO aims to rank a page in search results. AEO aims to have a page's answer used directly, in snippets, voice results or AI summaries. AEO builds on SEO: a page has to be indexed and trusted before its answers can be used anywhere.

FAQ rich results now show only for a small set of government and health sites, so most businesses will not see them. FAQ markup is still valid when it matches the visible questions, but the real value is the clear question and answer on the page itself.

Lead with a one or two sentence answer, roughly 40 to 60 words, that makes sense on its own. Then add detail below for readers who want it. Short, specific answers are easier for snippets and AI tools to reuse accurately.

Start with your own calls, messages and emails. Then check Google's People Also Ask boxes and autocomplete for your main services, and the queries in Google Search Console. Questions repeated by real customers come first.
